Peloton bikes are expensive—there’s no doubt about that. A basic bike is $1,445, the Bike+ is $2,495, and the All-Access membership is $44 per month—but hey, at least the shipping and setup are free. Unfortunately, that’s not where the costs of a Peloton end. The good news is that the extra money you spend on certain accessories and additional tools will go a long way. From getting a better workout with the right shoes and weights, to protecting your floor with a quality mat, these are upgrades worth making.

Take it from me: I bought a Peloton four years ago and have spent plenty of time considering what I need to make my rides even better and more beneficial. Beyond some Delta cleats, which we’ll get to, you don’t need any of these if you want to just perform a straightforward ride, but you’ll enjoy some major benefits if you do decide to start upgrading your bike.

Overall Peloton costs

The first few days I had my Peloton, I was a little surprised because I hadn’t realized I’d need special shoes, a pad under it, or someplace to stick my phone. I was annoyed, too, because I’d just dropped a rack on this thing and was already being forced to spend more. Spending some extra money on my bike didn’t turn out to be that big of a deal in the long run because I use it all the time—and the upgrades I’ve made help me use it even better. Depending on how often you plan to use yours and what you want to do with it, you may spend a lot more than you initially expected. Spend some time tracking how often you use it and what issues you’re running into before buying the whole slew of accessories and goodies for it upfront.
